In the next few months, approximately 8,000 San Franciscans will lose some or all of their In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) because of state budget cuts. IHSS provides vital personal care and domestic services that allow seniors and younger individuals with disabilities to remain at home and in the community. Although the implementation date is not certain, the cuts could go into effect as soon as October 1, 2009.

This training will allow volunteers to help clients preserve these essential services by assisting them in administrative appeals. Volunteers do not need to be admitted to the bar to provide this assistance, and while legal training is very helpful, it is not essential. This training will provide the information you need to work with these clients and help clients prepare for fair hearings.

After attending the training, volunteers are asked to help at least two clients prepare for hearings and/or to provide representation at their hearings, which generally last 30-60 minutes.
