Since 1978, Human Rights First has worked to protect and promote fundamental human rights around the world. Our Refugee Protection Program assists indigent refugees from all backgrounds who have fled persecution on the basis of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, and who are seeking asylum in the United States. Many of these asylum seekers are in urgent need of legal representation to prepare their cases for adjudication by judges at the Immigration Court. Others need legal representation before the Asylum Office. Some are fighting their cases from immigration detention.

On Thursday, June 7th, 2012, Human Rights First will sponsor a training for attorneys interested in becoming volunteers with our asylum legal representation program, and others interested in learning more about asylum law and procedure. The training will take place at the law firm of McElroy Deutsch Mulvaney & Carpenter LLP located at Three Gateway Center, 100 Mulberry Street, Newark, NJ 07102. The training will begin at 11:55am and will run until 2:30pm, with registration from 11:30am to 11:55am. Lunch will be served. Speakers will include an immigration judge, an asylum officer, a psychologist with experience working with survivors of torture, and Lori Adams, Managing Attorney from Human Rights First who will speak on techniques for representing asylum applicants and recent developments in asylum law.

CLE credit will be available. The training provides 3 credits in New Jersey. It provides 2½ credits in Pennsylvania (which also qualify in New York because PA is an approved jurisdiction).

The training is free, and no prior experience in immigration law is necessary. Participants should RSVP to RPP_NYEvents@humanrightsfirst.org by June 5, 2012. Space is limited.

Human Rights First is a non-governmental organization which works to promote international human rights and refugee protection. Human Rights First’s Refugee Protection Program has played a leading role in advancing fairness and non-discrimination for those seeking asylum in the United States.
