Housing Discrimination Law Project (HDLP)

The Housing Discrimination Law Project of the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis represents low-income protected class persons in the Mid-Minnesota Legal Assistance Service and, with the Minnesota Disability Law Center, people with disabilities throughout Minnesota concerning violations of federal, state and local civil rights laws protecting clients' fair housing rights. Activities include affirmative litigation in federal and state courts and advocacy before civil rights enforcement agencies for emergency relief, damages, declaratory and injunctive remedies. Most cases involve claims of differential treatment of clients on the basis of race, familial status (families with children) and/or public assistance status in rental housing or failure to make reasonable accommodations to persons with disabilities. In addition to representing many individuals, HDLP staff participate in community legal education and public policy activities. HDLP will share a library on housing discrimination, and offers technical assistance on fair housing issues.
