Bay Area Legal Aid (BayLegal)

Bay Area Legal Aid (BayLegal) provides free civil legal services to low-income residents of the Bay Area; including: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. BayLegal's services include: advice, referrals, limited scope assistance, representation, public policy and impact advocacy, trainings, outreach, and community education.

BayLegal focuses on the four priority areas identified by clients and the community:

Ø Domestic Violence: Assist domestic violence survivors to escape the violence and create a safe and stable environment for themselves and their families through Family Law, Restraining Order and Immigration assistance.


Ø Housing Preservation: Assist clients to access and preserve safe affordable housing free of discrimination.


Ø Access to Health Care: Assist clients to obtain healthcare services from county and state programs.


Ø Economic Security: Assist clients to secure public benefits and eliminate the barriers to employment and self-sufficiency.

§ Extended Representation - Represent a client within your specialty and/or with training and support from BayLegal;

§ Limited Representation - Represent or assist a client on a limited unbundled basis with a specific issue, matter, and/or hearing;

§ Restraining Order Clinics - BayLegal conducts DV Restraining Order Clinics in Redwood City, throughout Contra Costa County, and is a partner in San Francisco's Cooperative Restraining Order Clinic. Clinics assist pro per litigants with the pleadings necessary to receive a restraining order.

§ Consult with a client - on a issue within your specialty and/or after you receive training;

§ Co-counsel - with BayLegal staff or a less experienced volunteer;

§ Mentor - consult with BayLegal staff attorneys and volunteers in areas of your specialty;

§ Research/Investigation - assist with research and investigation of systemic legal issues facing the indigent to improve access to justice
