The AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP) serves persons living with HIV disease or AIDS who reside in the San Francisco Bay Area counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Solano and Sonoma. Since 1983, over 30,000 people have called on the AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP) for help with a legal matter--often a crisis--that has emerged to threaten the remaining stability in their lives.

ALRP's legal work responds to basic human needs. Handling insurance disputes, we safeguard access to medical care. Advocating on behalf of people whose Social Security applications have been denied, we secure a vital source of income. Fighting unfair evictions, we prevent homelessness. Taking on employment discrimination cases, we help people to continue working as long as they are able. Handling guardianship cases, we provide parents with the peace of mind that comes from knowing their children will be well cared-for. And by providing wills and durable powers of attorney, we help individuals retain their dignity and ensure that their decisions will be carried out.

Despite the dire nature of their legal problems, were it not for ALRP, most people with HIV simply could not afford professional representation. Most ALRP clients live on disability income; over 75% have annual incomes below $18,000. ALRP and its network of over 600 volunteer attorneys provide legal help to those who need it most--and can afford it least.

ALRP volunteer attorneys have access to:

· Experienced ALRP volunteer attorneys who will be available to serve as your mentors

· Free MCLE Trainings by and for ALRP volunteers. For detailed information on upcoming MCLE Trainings see, our Calendar.

· Useful training materials and sample legal forms in a wide variety of areas

· A Panel of over 600 attorneys throughout the Bay Area who have demonstrated their commitment to helping those with HIV/AIDS

In addition, ALRP carries malpractice insurance for its volunteer attorneys.
