Asylum-seekers who are accused of providing "material support" to "terrorist organizations" can be barred from obtaining relief. This webinar will cover the statutory elements necessary for a material support charge and the government's burden of proof. This webinar will also address defenses to a material support charge, including materiality, duress, and other possible arguments.

Presenters:
Dan Torres, ILRC Staff Attorney
Dan's work includes combating immigration provider fraud, conducting know your rights presentations, providing technical assistance to pro bono attorneys who are handling cases in the federal courts of appeals, and serving as the ILRC's Attorney of the Day. He is also the co-author of ILRC's publication, Motions to Suppress. Before joining the ILRC, Dan represented clients as a staff attorney at the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation in Sacramento, worked as a clinical instructor at the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic, and served as a staff attorney for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Theodore Roethke, Attorney and Equal Justice Works Fellow, Asian Law Caucus
Theodore's work focuses on protecting the rights of detained immigrants and immigrants facing overreaching national security related immigration charges. In 2007, his article American Law and the Problem of Coerced Provision of Support to a Terrorist Organization as Grounds for Removal appeared in the Temple Political & Civil Rights Law Review.
