Tacoma Pierce County Bar Association Volunteer Legal Services Program

The Volunteer Legal Services Program of the Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association facilitates access to low-income legal services in the City of Tacoma and Pierce County through attorney referrals, advice clinics and pro se clinics which are made possible by the dedication of the volunteer attorneys of the Pierce County Bar. Volunteer attorneys are needed to: • Sign up to be available to provide full representation, limited representation, or advice and consultation on an individual basis to low-income clients with a variety of civil legal needs including bankruptcy, family law, landlord-tenant, home ownership, contracts, employment, wills and estates, Social Security/SSI, housing, etc. As a volunteer attorney your level of involvement with the program and the type of work you do is determined entirely by your own interests and schedule. Support is available through the program for some costs of litigation and for translation services, as is training. • Staff Neighborhood Legal Clinics operating the first three Mondays of each month at the Pierce County Law Library, to provide consultation to clients who come to the clinic on a first-come first-served basis. • Staff the 'Fourth Monday' Bankruptcy Clinic at the Law Library, providing screening, advice and referral for low-income clients seeking assistance with debt and bankruptcy issues • Staff monthly clinics at Tacoma Housing Authority senior and family buildings, providing educational presentations and advice/consultation. • Staff the Housing Justice Project, providing advice and/or limited representation to low-income clients facing unlawful detainer proceedings • Staff the Pro Se Dissolution Clinic, providing paperwork review, advice and follow-up troubleshooting as necessary to clients representing themselves in simple divorce proceedings • Staff the Korean Community Pro Bono Clinic in Lakewood, providing advice and referral (translation provided) • Staff advice clinics operated by the Seattle University School of Law Access to Justice Institute (translation provided) • Volunteer to be the 'Attorney of the Day' in the VLS office, providing client intake and advice/consultation • Mentor a volunteer attorney working on a pro bono case through the VLS Program • Volunteer to be a presenter or panel member at a free CLE program sponsored by the VLS Program • Participate as a member of the Volunteer Legal Services Committee (meetings monthly) • Participate as a volunteer in fundraising campaigns and events sponsored by the Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Foundation to benefit the Volunteer Legal Services Program
