California Habeas Project

Organization Description

The California Habeas Project is a collaboration that enhances justice for domestic violence survivors incarcerated for crimes related to their experiences of being abused. With the support of volunteers throughout the state, we seek to free from prison domestic violence survivors who qualify for post-conviction habeas corpus relief under state law.

The Habeas Project trains and supports volunteer attorneys and advocates in filing habeas petitions, refers legal teams to expert witnesses on domestic violence, provides sample briefs to project attorneys to support their work, helps legal team members strategize about their cases, and provides trainings on representing clients.

Pro Bono Project Description:

Habeas Project Volunteer Attorney
Habeas Project volunteer attorneys represent incarcerated domestic violence survivors with post-conviction matters such as habeas petitions and parole. With the support and training of the Habeas Project, attorneys will: interview their clients; investigate their clients' histories of abuse; work with an expert witness to discover how the abuse the client experienced impacted her involvement in the crime for which she was convicted; and craft legal arguments to explain to a court how expert testimony on battering would have made a difference at the time of the original prosecution.
