- Organization: Volunteer Legal Services Project
WHEREAS, the Monroe County Bar Association, over twenty years ago, created the Volunteer Legal Services Project to facilitate the provision of pro bono services to Monroe County residents;
WHEREAS, the Monroe County Bar Association and its membership have over the twenty-year life of Volunteer Legal Services Project provided the volunteer attorneys to represent those in need of pro bono services;
WHEREAS, the Monroe County Bar Association assisted Volunteer Legal Services Project financially through Monroe County Bar Foundation grants and through its support of the Campaign for Justice phon-a-thon;
WHEREAS, the Code of Professional Responsibility places upon each lawyer a duty to assist in providing legal services to those unable to pay;
WHEREAS, the civil legal needs of the poor are skyrocketing, with approximately three legal problems arising in each Monroe County low-income household per year;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, the undersigned, call upon the membership of the Monroe County Bar Association, to take a leadership role in providing civil pro bono services to the low income residents of Monroe County;
THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Monroe County Bar Association should partner with Volunteer Legal Services Project in encouraging private attorneys to provide free representation to low income clients with civil legal problems;
THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Monroe County Bar Association is encouraging its membership to commit to a minimum of one pro bono case per year with Volunteer Legal Services Project.
