Unemployment Insurance Advocacy Project Training

Monday November 02 , 2009

The VOLS Unemployment Insurance Advocacy Project provides pro bono legal services to individuals who have lost their jobs and subsequently been denied unemployment insurance benefits. Lawyers participating in the project will represent clients at hearings before administrative law judges and may appeal adverse rulings to the Unemployment Insurance Appeal Board. Upon completion of the training, cases will be available to training participants on a rolling basis. Cases will be screened by VOLS for merit, and mentors will be provided to assist volunteer lawyers as they take cases.

At a time of widespread economic distress, this is an opportunity for lawyers to relieve some of the anguish and suffering being experienced by New Yorkers who have lost their jobs. The Unemployment Insurance Appeal Board, which oversees the hearing and appeal process, has pledged its full cooperation in support of this project.

Pre-registration is required. To register, please send your name and contact information to Rweinstein@volsprobono.org.
