Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP was awarded the 2010 Beacon of Justice Award by the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (“NLADA”) for its extraordinary commitment to providing pro bono legal representation in immigration cases. The presentation took place at NLADA’s Exemplar Award Dinner in Washington D.C. and was attended by firm partner Sarah Cave and associates Melissa Duffy, Andares Castrillon, Corinne Lane, and Michelle Mitchell.
The Legal Aid Society nominated Hughes Hubbard for the honor, calling the firm a “pro bono leader in New York City” with an “outstanding” sense of responsibility to low-income immigrants. Jojo Annobil, Supervising Attorney for the Society’s Immigration Unit, and Maria Navarro, a supervising attorney with the unit, have worked closely with Hughes Hubbard on a wide variety of immigration-related pro bono matters. The firm staffs the Society’s Detention Defense hotline for detained immigrants and played a vital role in providing legal assistance for Haitians seeking Temporary Protected Status.
From January 2009 through April 2010, the firm logged 4,038 hours on 549 immigration cases, ranging from obtaining permanent status for abandoned, abused and neglected youth; to assisting Haitians who could not return to their home country after this year’s devastating earthquake; to ensuring that women are free from torture, particularly female genital mutilation. Sarah Cave, who helps oversee the firm’s pro bono work, said she was both flattered and awestruck that The Legal Aid Society chose to nominate Hughes Hubbard for the honor. The award carries special significance in that it recognizes firm-wide work on immigration issues.
“These cases are so compelling,” Cave said. “What has always resonated with me is that immigration cases often have very emotional elements. You’re literally saving someone’s life, or keeping families together, or helping someone realize a dream
