SCINTO DEDICATE PRO BONO RESOURCES TO SAVE CRUCIAL SECTION 8 HOUSING
SUBSIDIES FOR LOW-INCOME NEW YORKERS New York City has increased substantially the termination of
Section 8 housing subsidy vouchers, placing low-income New Yorkers in
danger of losing their subsidized apartments, one of the most important
and largest source of affordable housing for low-income people in New York
City. Vouchers are being terminated on a number of arbitrary grounds: the
tenant had to transfer to a new apartment due to a building vacate order;
unsubstantiated allegations that the tenant did not submit required
documents; and bureaucratic lack of diligence in reviewing individual

On November 4th, the Legal Aid Society's 2010 Pro Bono Awards
Ceremony will honor the leading pro bono volunteers, law firms,
corporations, and individual community representatives for their
outstanding pro bono services provided to The Legal Aid Society and the
Society's clients during the past year. This select group of professionals
was nominated by the Society's staff from a pool of more than 3,000 pro
bono attorneys and paralegals who contributed professional services on

COVINGTON & BURLING LLP, DECHERT LLP, MAYER BROWN LLP,
AND WEIL, GOTSHAL & MANGES LLP JOIN THE LEGAL AID SOCIETY AS PRO BONO
COUNSEL FOR ALABAMA DEATH ROW INMATES The Legal Aid Society and its staff members act as pro bono counsel
for four prisoners on Alabama's Death Row who have exhausted direct
appeals. Although inmates may seek post-conviction relief, Alabama is not
constitutionally mandated to appoint counsel for these proceedings. The
Legal Aid Society's Alabama Death Penalty Pro Bono Project, which works
with law firm co-counsel, provides zealous representation of death

THIRTEENTH ANNUAL LEGAL AID SOCIETY CLE PRO BONO TRAINING
SERIES ANNOUNCED The Legal Aid Society is proud to present its 13th annual CLE Pro
Bono Training Series, which commences on December 2, 2010 with a session
on Not-For-Profit Incorporation and extends through the end of April 2011.
The training sessions will be conducted at participating New York City law

SIMPSON THACHER & BARTLETT LLP'S COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM PLAYS VITAL ROLE IN FORMATION OF NEW WORKER COOPERATIVE
Two years ago, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP established a
rotational corporate externship with The Legal Aid Society Civil
Practice's Community Development Project ("CDP"). CDP offers transactional
legal services to low-income small businesses, nonprofit organizations,
and housing projects for low-income people. Every four months, an
experienced Simpson associate joins CDP and expands the unit's capacity to

THE LEGAL AID SOCIETY HOSTS SECOND YEAR OF LAW FIRM AND LAW
SCHOOL EXTERNS After the successful conclusion of The Legal Aid Society's
2009-2010 deferred associate extern class, the largest in New York City,
the Society recently welcomed the 2010-2011 class of sixteen externs from
major law firms and law schools. We anticipate that, as with last year's
class, this group will assist the Society's staff in providing crucial
legal services to low-income New Yorkers in a time of increased demand and
