NYSBA calls for Empire State Counsel program nominees
Friday, January 11, 2008
- Organization: NYSBA
In 2006, the New York State Bar Association introduced the Empire State Counsel program to honor lawyers donating 50 hours or more of free legal services to individuals who cannot afford legal representation. Last year, the NYSBA received applications from over 460 members seeking this honorific title. This year, far fewer applications have been received, despite the expansion of eligible attorneys to include those who provided services not just to individuals but also to not-for-profit, governmental or public services organizations whose services are designed primarily to address the legal and other basic needs of persons of limited financial means.
Lawyers who wish to be recognized must apply by January 31, 2008. All members of the NYSBA who donated their services to appropriate individuals or organizations should verify their eligibility by submitting a verification form.
