The Legal Aid Society Launches a New Anti-Gun Violence Initiative

Tuesday, November 05, 2013

  • Organization: The Legal Aid Society

The Legal Aid Society recently launched a new anti-gun violence initiative, implemented with support from the New York City Council’s Task Force to Combat Gun Violence.

By utilizing a comprehensive model of "Know Your Rights" trainings in schools and communities, related direct representation of community residents by both the Society's Juvenile Rights and Criminal Defense Practices, and the provision of civil legal services such as housing, benefits and employment assistance in our Civil Practice, the Society has been able to provide anti-gun violence legal assistance in conjunction with community-based organizations.

The Legal Aid Society’s Anti-Gun Violence Initiative is operating as a Unit of dedicated full-time staff. The Society’s Anti-Gun Violence Unit (AGVU) will provide legal services/case consults in a specific catchment area in each of the five boroughs in which anti-violence services will also be provided through the Ceasefire model (now called "CureViolence"). This is a public health model originated in Chicago that responds to gun violence with services in the community – mediation, social services, violence interrupters, etc. The model works on the theory that if conflicts can be worked out by people in the community, further violence can be avoided.
