The City Bar Justice Center’s Veterans Assistance Project honors Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP for Outstanding Pro Bono Participation

Monday, April 29, 2013

  • Organization: City Bar Justice Center

This year the Veterans Assistance Project at the City Bar Justice Center celebrates five years of pro bono service to men and women who have served in the armed forces.  The success of the Project over the last five years would not be possible without the incredible support and commitment of firms like Davis Polk and Wardwell LLP.  The firm has over forty active volunteers with the Veterans Assistance Project and continues to be an integral part of the Project.  The Veterans Assistance Project would like to extend a special thank you to Scott Wilcox, John McCarthy, J. Stan Barrett, Alison Haggerty, Virginia Morris and Brian Weinstein, who have had a number of outstanding successes over the past year.

These volunteers collectively won over $220,000 in retroactive service-connected disability benefits for veterans and their families.  Significant results of Davis Polk’s efforts also include veterans receiving monthly awards of more than $3000.  Thanks to the volunteers’ dedication and tireless efforts, a Vietnam era veteran suffering from post traumatic stress disorder was granted over $100,000 in retroactive service-connected disability benefits.  Another veteran suffering from post traumatic stress disorder after a horrific helicopter crash was granted almost $50,000 in retroactive benefits.  The widow of a World War II veteran was able to secure survivors benefits with the help of her Davis Polk volunteer attorney after many years of continuously being denied by the VA.  The Veterans Assistance Project is extremely grateful to Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP for its dedication to the Project and to our veterans in representing those who need it most.
