Volunteers Needed for School Monitoring Project with Advocates for Children - NYC Only

Friday, September 04, 2009

  • Organization: Advocates for Children

Background: Many parents experience problems with obtaining appropriate public school placements for their children with special education needs. Unlike general education students, students with special education needs often don’t find out what school they have been offered until mid-August. Last year, some students found themselves turned away from schools where they thought they had a placement, and others faced the start of the school year with no placement at all. Advocates for Children of New York (AFC) is asking for volunteers to monitor special education placement problems this school year to assess whether the problems are persisting.

School Monitoring Project: This project will involve going to a school or a central placement office and speaking with parents to see what their experiences have been this year with obtaining school placement for their children.

AFC will hold trainings on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. We are asking each participant to attend one of the following trainings:
11:00 am – NYU School of Law (Room TBA)
4:00 pm – Advocates for Children of New York, 151 West 30th Street, 5th Floor
4:00 pm – Brooklyn Law School (Room TBA)
We may be scheduling additional trainings.

Monitoring the schools and the central offices will begin on September 9, 2009 and will continue for approximately two weeks. We are hoping to sign up participants for 2-5 hour blocks of time. Whether you can devote one three hour block over the two weeks or two hours a day to this project, we hope you will join us!

How to Sign Up: If you would like to take part in this important project or have any questions, please e-mail Miranda Johnson at mjohnson@advocatesforchildren.org with your name, law firm/law school, phone #, e-mail address, and the languages you speak. Please let us know which training you will attend and, if you already know your schedule, which days/times you are available in 1-5 hour blocks to monitor schools on weekdays between September 9th and September 23rd anytime between 7:30am and 4:00pm. If you don’t know your schedule, just sign up now and we’ll contact you later to work out scheduling.
