Learning the Skill of Working 'low bono'

When Fred Rooney passed the bar and went to work at a legal services clinic, he was passionate about providing counsel to an underserved population. But it was tough to pay the bills so he opened a "low bono" private practice. "If I'd applied as a client, I'd have qualified for services," he recalled. Rooney is now director of the CUNY Community Legal Resource Network, a program for community-minded attorneys who dream of hanging a shingle to serve those who otherwise could not afford a lawyer.
