- Organization: The Legal Aid Society
The Legal Aid Society recently recognized Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP for its dedication to Legal Aid's most vulnerable clients - homeless families and mentally disabled prisoners.
Since 2005, an outstanding legal team, led by Richard W. Clary and Elizabeth L. Grayer, have worked tirelessly as co-counsel on the landmark McCain lawsuit which seeks to ensure that homeless children and their families receive lawful shelter and services. The firm has contributed more than 14,000 hours, prepared numerous briefs and affidavits, engaged in exhaustive document review, and has been instrumental in enabling the clients to move for enforcement of the court's orders.
The firm also serves as co-counsel in Messiah S. v. Alexander, a federal class action seeking appropriate pre-release planning and transitional services for inmates with psychiatric disabilities who will be released shortly to a New York City residence. These services, including mental health services and obtaining medical and subsistence-level benefits, are essential for a successful transition from the prison system to a supervised parole program. The Messiah S. litigation team at the firm is led by Antony L. Ryan.
