Family Law Attorney
Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation is seeking an attorney to work in NMIC's interdisciplinary Domestic Violence Project (DVP). The DVP currently offers non-residential counseling and advocacy services, in addition to a unique economic empowerment program, to a predominantly immigrant population of battered women. The DVP attorney will provide legal representation and advocacy to victims of domestic violence in Manhattan Family Court on a number of legal matters, including orders of protection, child support, custody, and visitation.
Duties:
* Provide legal representation and advocacy to victims of domestic violence in family law matters and complete VAWA immigration work
* Work in collaboration with NMIC's Domestic Violence Project (Social Services and Project RICA, the economic empowerment program)
* Assist in the development of grant proposals and other funding opportunities
* Compile and analyze programmatic statistical information for reports
* Participate in community-based initiatives such as the Washington Heights and Inwood Coalition Against Domestic Violence
* Contribute to and steer outreach and education programs
* Complete additional tasks as assigned by supervisor
Additional Qualifications:
* J.D. with admission to the New York State Bar
* At least 1-3 years relevant family & matrimonial law and court experience
* Nonprofit domestic violence work experience preferred
* Proficiency in Spanish oral and written communication. You must be comfortable interviewing clients in Spanish without a translator.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs
* Ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines
* Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and to interact with management and program staff
