Available Workshops
• Introduction to the IEP - This workshop is designed to acquaint you with the special education process and the rights of children with disabilities.
• Evaluation and Assessment - Important educational decisions are based on the results of psychological and educational achievement testing. Learn what different tests measure and what the test results mean.
• Behavior - Research has shown that if teachers and others have the knowledge and expertise to provide appropriate behavioral interventions, future behavior problems can be avoided and learning increases. This workshop covers behavior interventions, discipline and children's rights under IDEA.
• Understanding AD/HD - An overview of AD/HD and how it affects learning along with home and classroom strategies to improve educational outcomes.
• Alternative Dispute Resolution and the New Resolution Meeting - Strategies to avoid conflict in the IEP process and tools to manage it when it arises.
• Bullying - Bullyiing is never okay. This presentation teaches effective ways to respond to bullying, and to prevent bullying of all children, especially those with disabilities.
• Procedural Safeguards - Compliance Complaints and Due Process - The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act includes Procedural Safeguards. These safeguards are designed to protect the rights of parents and their child with a disability, as well as give families and schools a mechanism for resolving disputes.
• Transition to Adulthood - This workshop, is for parents of children with disabilities who are 14-21 and are writing a transition IEP. Information on postsecondary options, jobs, community living, home living, and recreation and leisure will be discussed. Transition aged students (16+ ) are invited!
• IEP Clinics - IEP clinics offer an opportunity for families to learn how to create an effective Individualized Education Program (IEP) for their student. An Education Advocate of the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund’s Parent Training & Information Center will meet with you to review your child’s IEP. * Most workshops can be delivered in Spanish.
