Immigration law is constantly evolving due to worldwide economic and demographic changes. Domestic politics play a key role in this process. This year’s program will take a comprehensive look at this phenomenon from several perspectives. What is the outlook for immigration reform, particularly after the election? Will there be any temporary relief before the end of 2008 with regard to H-1B visas or employment-based preference numbers? Meanwhile, we can expect other government actors to move ahead aggressively with their own initiatives. States will continue to enact and start to enforce employer sanctions legislation. Municipalities will accelerate efforts to “get tough” on undocumented workers, and the DHS will step up enforcement through criminal prosecutions and workplace raids. Concurrently, the DHS will continue to expand more restrictive interpretations of the law designed to protect U.S. workers. The DOL will continue to facilitate the effort through PERM audits.
At this year’s Institute, an outstanding faculty that includes top-level government officials will lead discussions about the recent changes and developments that impact your clients. Topics will include comprehensive immigration reform, immigrant and nonimmigrant adjudicatory and processing issues at the federal level, as well as the impact that new laws and policies will have on enforcement and on provisions for relief from removal.
PLEASE NOTE: PLI is also offering a Live Webcast of the Program. This means that you can view this program from your office or even at home on your computer. We can also set up a Group Cast which would enable a number of attorneys from your office to view the program at once. Full and partial scholarships to attend PLI's programs or view a webcast are available to legal aid and government attorneys, law professors, judges, judicial clerks, law students and employees of nonprofit organizations. Scholarship applications must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the program you wish to attend.
