Support the Troops: Know Their Rights!

Thursday June 12 , 2008

In times of combat as well as peace, a variety of factors can prompt the decision to withdraw from military service. Circumstances ranging from health conditions to family crisis to a shift in personal convictions can compromise or even preclude the efficient performance of duty. While withdrawal from service for appropriate cause is an established right, it must be exercised within the constraints of authorized military procedure. The administrative separation process that governs withdrawal from military service carries a host of emotional and practical consequences; without appropriate guidance, servicemembers can ultimately make choices that limit their rights to benefits and even expose them to legal liability. This training will instruct attorneys on such matters as conscientious objection claims, disability discharges, hardship separation, fraudulent/defective enlistment, AWOL information, and more. Participants will receive training and support to advise clients on discharge plans, explain procedures, gather supporting documents, and provide further representation or referrals if necessary.
