Welcome to New York Bankruptcy Practice Area!

This site has resources for volunteers of New York's two leading pro bono bankruptcy projects: The NYC Bankruptcy Assistance Project at Legal Services for New York City and the Consumer Bankruptcy Project City Bar Justice Center. Join us!

This site has materials for pro bono attorneys assisting debtors in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and is further focused on Chapter 7 practice.

Attorneys wishing to join this site in order to provide pro bono assistance to residents of New York City are strongly encouraged to join one or both of these pro bono projects. Just check the appropriate box(es) when filling out the "join" form for this Practice Area.

This Practice Area is also a primary clearinghouse for bankruptcy matters referred by the Courts to the Bankruptcy Panel Administrator pursuant to the General Order of the Southern and Eastern District Courts: "Rules Governing Procedures for Appointment of Pro Bono Counsel in Bankruptcy Proceedings from a Bankruptcy Pro Bono Panel."

LIBRARY

(Members only)

We have assembled (we hope) all of the materials necessary to prepare a Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition in the Southern or Eastern Districts of New York. This set is in the Library, in the folder called "Chapter 7 petition forms."

Instructions and checlists for NYC BAP's bankruptcy workshop and post-workshop followup are also in the Library in the folder called "Petition Assistance Training Materials."

TO VOLUNTEER

If you are an attorney interested in doing pro bono bankruptcy work, and have questions or suggestions about the materials herein, contact Bill Kransdorf at the NYC Bankruptcy Assistance Project, at 646-442-3646 or wkransdorf@lsny.org or John McManus at the City Bar Justice Center Consumer Bankruptcy Project, at 212-382-6698 or jmcmanus@nycbar.org.

New Resources

Debtors continue to reel from the impact of The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (BAPCPA). All forms, instructions, and other support materials in this Practice Area are for cases filed under BAPCPA.
