Topics will include: recruitment/retention of bilingual staff, staff training/assessment, integrating mandatory obligations with program resources, and outreach strategies. State and Local Language Access Campaigns: Strategies to Obtain Compliance

This session will present on the federal mandates and discuss enforcement strategies in the public benefits context, by examining four distinct strategies aimed at achieving state and local agency compliance with language access mandates including 1)legislative advocacy, 2)litigation, 3)civil rights complaints, and 4)administrative advocacy. Language Access in the Courts: Advocacy and Collaboration

The ABA Language Access Standards were adopted in February 2012 and provide an opportunity for legal aid attorneys and public defenders to advocate and collaborate with their courts so that language access services are provided for LEP litigants/clients. This session includes an overview of legal requirements and a brief description of advocacy at the national and local levels. Current Federal Government Efforts to Increase Language Access

This session will cover both the current effort to enhance language access to federal programs, as well as enforcement efforts directed at recipients of federal funding.
