Today Show Features Chris Nugent and The List Project

Saturday, January 30, 2010

  • Organization: Holland & Knight

A recent trip to Jordan, Syria, Kuwait and Iraq with List Project founder Kirk Johnson is highlighted on the national morning show.

Last fall, NBC's Today featured Holland & Knight's award-winning participation in The List Project to Resettle Iraqi Allies, including footage of Washington, D.C. Senior Counsel Chris Nugent. In the clip, Chris is shown working with an Iraqi refugee client separated from her son in the United Arab Emirates and providing Congressional testimony to the Helsinki Commission.

The impetus for Today's interest was the recent two-week fact-finding mission Chris undertook with List Project founder Kirk Johnson. With filmmakers from Principle Pictures in tow, Chris and Kirk visited and interviewed approximately 50 List Project pro bono clients in Jordan, Syria, Kuwait and Iraq. Chris and Kirk met with clients who worked for the United States in dire circumstances (including living under imminent death threat by insurgents) and refugees who have languished for more than five years awaiting resettlement in the United States.  Principle Pictures is working on a documentary about The List Project destined for PBS and Sundance.

"The courageous Iraqis we met who sacrificed everything working for the United States were awe-inspiring, not only because of the egregious persecution they experienced and faced at the hands of the insurgents, but also because of their tenacious faith and patience in the U.S. government that they will ultimately be rescued and provided with permanent safety and protection in America," Chris said. "Their compelling service to the United States and immediate health and safety needs warrant expedited processing of their cases."

To date, with the pro bono participation of over 75 attorneys and paralegals, Holland & Knight has secured protection and resettlement to approximately 100 Iraqi ally principals and their family members.
