Legal services law firms occasionally have need for assistance with organized projects (other than direct litigation) to provide legal assistance to a group of clients. For example, these might include:

* Pro se clinics - to help mulitiple low-income clients complete forms (one-on-one)
* Amicus briefs - to support impact cases.
* Advance directives - to provide support to legal services staff when large numbers of clients are affected by an issue (e.g., natural disasters, corporate bankruptcy, etc.).
* Advisor pools - to serve as consultants to legal services staffs, particularly on speciality type areas (e.g., tax, real estate, bankruptcy).

The key to this type of pro bono service is to contact your local legal services law firm and volunteer for the types of projects for which you mightconsider providing pro bono service. Contact your local PAI Coordinator for potential projects available and/or to be listed in the pro bono volunteer pool.

PROJECT Available for Pro bono:
Legal Aid of NC's Battered Immigrant Project (LANC-BIP)
PBO#: BIP-01-2009
DESCRIPTION: The LANC-BIP (Legal Aid of NC's Battered Immigrant Project) is happy and able to mentor law school student volunteers, licensed attorneys, and bilingual paralegals working under attorney supervision to provide legal assistance to immigrant victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Victims of domestic violence or sexual assault (among other crimes), who have suffered substantial physical or emotional harm as a result of a crime--and can obtain a certification from law enforcement that they have been helpful in the investigation and/or prosecution of the crime--are eligible to apply for crime victim visas-or "U visas." The U visa application process is difficult and intimidating to somebody not familiar with our language and laws. You can single-handedly change your client's life by providing the means to come out of the shadows and live without fear of violence or deportation. The BIP welcomes volunteers to sign up to help us with these life-altering cases. We look forward to hearing from you!
