Five volunteer lawyers in Gaston County were recognized for their outstanding pro bono contributions through their local Volunteer Lawyers Program at the bi-monthly bar meeting on Wednesday, April 28, 2012.

Ashley E. Lorance of Katzenstein and Lorance, Emily H. Leazer of Gray Layton Kersh, and Douglas P. Arthurs and Nancy E. Foltz of Arthurs and Foltz received 2011 VLP Distinguished Service Awards.

R. Dennis Lorance of Katzenstein and Lorance received the 2011 VLP Service Award.

Becki Lowder, Coordinator for the Volunteer Lawyers Program in the Legal Aid of North Carolina's Gastonia office, presented the awards. The awards are based upon the number of hours reported in closed cases for 2011. Hours reported for each award recipient were in the area of family law, with the exception of Leazer's contribution, which was in the area of tax law.

Lowder commended the Gaston Bar for their continuing commitment since 1987, when the current program was formed. The dollar contribution to the community of the bar's pro bono program work this year neared $127,000.
