Five attorneys in the Gaston County Bar were recognized for outstanding contributions to their pro bono clients through the Volunteer Lawyers Program at Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc., in Gastonia.

R. Dennis Lorance and Geoffrey A. Planer received VLP Distinguished Service Awards during an Advisory Board luncheon at the Gastonia City Club on Tuesday, March 29, 2011. Lorance provided client service in family law, while Planer assisted clients with consumer, family, and bankruptcy cases. Both attorneys provided in excess of 50 hours to clients through the VLP during 2010.

Attorneys receiving VLP Service Awards included Michael K. Hodnett, Reid C. James, and Gerald Liska. Hodnett and James provided family law assistance to their pro bono clients, while Liska's pro bono contribution consisted of helping clients with unemployment insurance appeals hearings. Hodnett and James provided more than 40 pro bono hours each on client cases. Liska assisted nine clients with appeals hearings.

Becki Lowder, Coordinator of the VLP since 1987, presented the awards.

Established in 1986, the Gaston County VLP has a long and distinguished history assisting pro bono clients. The Gaston County Bar Association has received the NCBA's Chief Justice Award several times, as well as receiving the ABA's prestigious Harrison Tweed Award.
