Illness And Injury As Contributors To Bankruptcy

About half of the 1.4 million American families filing bankruptcy in 2001 cited medical causes for their indebtedness. Among those whose illnesses led to bankruptcy, out-of-pocket costs average $11,854 since the start of the illness. This article shows that even middle-class insured families often fall prey to financial catastrophe when they get sick.
