Census Bureau Releases 2003 Poverty Statistics

The Census Bureau has released "Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2003." The nation's official poverty rate rose from 12.1 percent in 2002 to 12.5 percent in 2003. The number of people with health insurance increased by 1.0 million to 243.3 million between 2002 and 2003, and the number without such coverage rose by 1.4 million to 45.0 million. The percentage of the nation's population without coverage grew from 15.2 percent in 2002 to 15.6 percent in 2003. http://www.census.gov/prod/2004pubs/p60-226.pdf
