Tools for Advocacy: Getting Beyond the Basics in Domestic Violence Litigation
This interactive course is designed for attorneys representing domestic violence victims in family court litigation, and includes an hour of ethics training and an hour of professionalism training. The program objective is to provide both new and experienced domestic violence practitioners with an opportunity to examine and refine the core skills they routinely use in domestic violence litigation.
The training format alternates between lecture and practice skills exercises. During practice skills exercises, participants are encouraged to experiment with proposed strategies for improving or refining courtroom advocacy skills, and are provided feedback by peers and expert instructors. This interactive instruction is supplemented throughout the day with substantive lecture and discussion that explores the interpretation and application of Louisiana's domestic violence statutes, the effects of trauma on victims and their cases, and the challenges of negotiating settlements that do not compromise victim safety.
