Pro Bono Project of HELP Legal Assistance and the Scott and Clinton County Bar Associations
Volunteer Opportunities in Scott and Clinton Counties
JOIN HELP'S VOLUNTEER LAWYERS PROJECT:
HELP Legal Assistance, Inc., maintains a Pro Bono Program that serves residents of Scott and Clinton Counties. Volunteers for the project are attorneys who practice in those two counties. To join HELP's Pro Bono Program call 563-322-6216 or 1-800-627-1596.
HOW LAWYERS CAN HELP IOWA'S POOR:
By contributing your expertise through the Pro Bono Project of HELP Legal Assistance and the Scott and Clinton County Bar Associations, you can provide desperately needed legal assistance. It is projected that approximately 400,000 low-income people in Iowa cannot afford an attorney, yet have serious legal problems. The Lawyers Code of Professional Responsibility encourages every lawyer "to find time to participate in serving the disadvantaged" by ensuring equal access to justice.
HOW THE SCOTT AND CLINTON COUNTY PRO BONO PROJECT WORKS:
The Project has been designed to give participating attorneys control over the number of pro bono referrals to be accepted and the decision as to whether to accept a given referral at a given time. Volunteer lawyers are initially contacted by a staff member of HELP, rather than by the would-be client, and are given the opportunity to accept or decline each referral.
YOUR SKILLS ARE NEEDED:
The Pro Bono Project of HELP Legal Assistance and the Scott and Clinton County Bar Associations needs attorneys willing to represent low-income clients in a wide variety of civil legal matters, including family law, consumer problems, landlord/tenant disputes, civil rights and government benefits cases.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE PRO BONO PROJECT?
All Iowa attorneys, recent admittees as well as experienced practitioners practicing in Scott or Clinton County, are encouraged to participate in the Pro Bono Project. Established members of the bar will appreciate the opportunity to explore new areas of practice and develop new insights into the problems of the poor. Younger attorneys will gain valuable litigation experience through their contributions.
Pro Bono Projects are an innovative approach to providing high quality services to Iowa's low-income population. To be successful, however, they must receive contributions of time and expertise from attorneys who are committed to ensuring equal justice for all Iowans. Your help is urgently needed. Please volunteer.
