What will this training cover? This two-day introductory level course covers immigration law and practice pointers for representing immigrant survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking in persons and other violent crimes. CLINIC attorneys Julia Alanen and Susan Schreiber will describe the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) self-petitioning requirements and processing with CIS, VAWA adjustment of status and waivers, U nonimmigrant visas and adjustment requirements, and a brief introduction to trafficking in persons and the T visa. The training method combines a balance of lecture, interactive exercises and the use of mock case files to demonstrate application of the law. An application for Ohio CLE credit is pending.

Who should take this training? The training is intended for the staff of community-based organizations with IRS 501(c) (3) status, and attorneys and legal worker staff of private law offices. This course is targeted to immigration legal services providers who are new to serving immigrant survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and other violent crimes. We also welcome domestic violence and sexual assault advocates, lawyers and legal workers who are new to immigration law. Note, however, that we will not be covering introductory immigration law concepts and the fundamentals of family-based immigration. If you are registering for this training and have no immigration law background, we strongly suggest that you review the introductory immigration law resources that we will forward to you before the training. These include some written materials and a link to two webinars addressing family-based immigration.

What are the training costs?
