The Legal Aid Society of D.C.
The Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia was formed in 1932 to "provide legal aid and counsel to indigent persons in civil law matters and to encourage measures by which the law may better protect and serve their needs." In pursuit of our mission, Legal Aid employs a range of strategies to address the legal needs of our clients and our client community. The largest part of our work is direct client service in our legal and social work programs. From the experiences of our clients, we identify opportunities for law reform, public policy advocacy and systemic reform litigation. Legal Aid primarily provides services in the areas of housing, family law, and public benefits.
Legal Aid's Pro Bono Program refers cases to volunteer attorneys working in private law firms and government agencies. After the matters are screened and referred to a volunteer attorney, an experienced Legal Aid attorney mentor is assigned to answer any questions, provide sample pleadings, discuss relevant law and strategy, and provide ongoing mentoring as the case moves forward.
For information on current pro bono opportunities in the areas of housing, family law, and public benefits, please see below or contact Jodi Feldman, Director of Pro Bono and Intake Programs, at (202) 628-1161 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
