D.C. EXPUNGEMENT VOLUNTEER TRAINING
(Criminal Record Sealing)
Hosted By- PROJECT FRESH START: A joint initiative of the National Bar Association, NAACP and Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law
Saturday, March 29, 2014
*Check In will begin at 9:00am*
In difficult economic times, having a clean criminal record is more important than ever. A person's criminal history may affect efforts to find employment, rent an apartment, obtain a loan, vote, obtain certain licenses, or receive government benefits. Expungement is a legal process that permits qualified individuals to have their criminal records sealed or, in some cases, destroyed. Unfortunately, lack of knowledge about the expungement process disproportionally affects members of the low income/disadvantaged community.
This training will prepare D.C. attorneys to offer brief legal information to individuals during expungement walk-in clinics and provide full representation to those deemed eligible to file for an expungement. Trainees must agree to assist with at least one walk in clinic and accept at least one pro bono referral for full representation in exchange for the free training.
The training will cover:
- Eligible vs. Non-Eligible Offenses in the District of Columbia
- How to Read a Criminal Record
- How to Determine if an Offense is Eligible for Expungement
- How to File for an Expungement in D.C. Superior Court
- Managing Expectations of Individuals Seeking an Expungement
- Referral Services for Individuals Who Are Ineligible for an Expungement
ALL TRAINEES MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE ATTENDING THE TRAINING
To apply, please send your resume to Shannon Redd at email@example.com
If you are approved to attend the training, you will be notified via email by Friday, March 14th.
Clinics will be held in April 2014. Date: TBD
PLEASE NOTE: No particular expertise is required to participate. Attorneys must be admitted to practice in the District of Columbia. This training session is not MCLE accredited. Training materials may ONLY be used for the purpose of pro bono legal representation.
