2009 Message from the President and President-Elect of the American Bar Association
Dear Colleagues,
It is an honor to offer this planning guide for the first National Pro Bono Week Celebration. The celebration recognizes the valuable work lawyers do throughout the year, without fee, to represent those who cannot afford civil legal assistance.
The American legal profession is among the very few that calls on its members to make a difference in their communities through pro bono work. We can take pride in the fact that nearly three-quarters of us, 73 percent, report doing pro bono work for people of limited means.
Our celebration offers a time to reflect on this core value of our profession. Pro bono brings hope to the powerless and gives a voice against injustice. While we have done much, there is still so much yet to be done.
Please join with us as we celebrate the achievements of pro bono lawyers and elevate them to even higher levels of service.
