As part of the National Celebration of Pro Bono Week, former Vice Prsident Walter Mondale will speak at a Civil Gideon Continuing Legal Education program at the University of St. Thomas Law School in Minneapolis. The program is sponsored by the Minnesota State Bar Association Civil Gideon Task Force Judges Committee, and will take place on Friday, October 30, from 8:30 a.m. to Noon. Mr. Mondale has been a prominent role model and proponent of a life-long commitment to public and community service.
Minnesota is a national leader in the discussion of the right to counsel in civil cases, commonly known as Civil Gideon. In 2006, the Minnesota State Bar Association formally adopted the resolution generated by the American Bar Association urging "state, territorial, and federal jurisdictions to provide legal counsel as a matter of right at public expense to low income persons in those categories of adversarial proceedings where basic human needs are at stake, such as those involving shelter, sustenance, safety, health, or child custody."
