If you're looking for a more face-to-face approach to pro bono, this could be an ideal opportunity for you. Public Counsel, in coordination with the Bankruptcy Court, organizes pre-hearing counseling for pro se debtors once a month at the bankruptcy courts in Los Angeles and Woodland Hills. Pro se debtors are given the opportunity to speak to an attorney regarding their upcoming reaffirmation hearings prior to seeing a judge. Volunteer attorneys are needed on an ongoing monthly basis (about two hours a month) to staff the reaffirmation clinic. Volunteers will be giving consultation only - not representation - to the debtors. Among the founders of this program is the chief judge of the Bankruptcy Court. Public Counsel will provide volunteer attorneys with information and guidelines about the reaffirmation process, so prior bankruptcy experience is not necessary.
