Writing is central to the craft of good advocacy and the skill that legal advocates use most frequently. For mentors the tension lies in representing the client well when presented with a below standard piece of writing. Under deadline pressure, rewriting seems faster and easier than giving feedback, allowing the author to rewrite and learn from the process. Yet the best way to learn how to write is to write when the final result matters, under the tutelage of experienced writers. This workshop shows you how to take this situation and turn it into a powerful learning experience.

This hands-on, interactive workshop is intended for supervisors, colleagues and others who are mentoring staff on ways to develop their writing skills.

Writing Mentors Workshop focuses on the tools that can assist mentors and mentees as well as key skills involved in mentoring.
You will learn to:

? Assess your mentees' current competency level

? Use strategies to improve others' writing skills

? Develop your mentoring skills

? Use the resources of Benchmark's online Writers Café
in the mentoring process

You will leave with the outline of a plan and strategies to pursue with your mentee as well as a plan for yourself as a mentor.
